This week we're looking at electrical fires and how to reduce the risk of them in the home.

One of the most common causes of fire in the home is electrical goods. From white goods to faulty chargers, electrical items are the number 4 risk of fire in the home. Here are some top tips to help reduce that risk.

How to avoid electrical fires

> Make sure your appliances have a British or European safety mark.

> High powered appliances, such as washing machines, should have a single plug to themselves.

> Extension leads & adapters have a limit as to how many amps they can take. Make sure you don't overload them.

> Monitor appliances for wear and tear. Look out for signs of loose wiring, scorch marks, damaged cables etc.

> Unplugging appliances helps reduce risk of fire.

> Styling appliances such as hair straighteners, curling tongs etc. can get to extreme temperatures. Make sure they are on heatproof surfaces both when being used and when cooling down. Unplug them when not in use and allow to cool completely before putting them away.

Fire safety is everyone's responsibility within the home. It is important to make sure residents of all ages know what steps they can take to reduce the risk.
